make this publication happen on a weekly basis is also notable. Impressive work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Second Place &#8211;\u00a0Ka Manao of Leeward Community College,\u00a0\u201cA terrific publication, beautifully designed and not afraid to take on sensitive\u00a0issues. Excellent work, across the board.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>NON-DAILY NEWSPAPER<\/p>\n<p>First Place &#8211;\u00a0Pacific Business News,\u00a0I was impressed at many aspects of this publication. Some excellent work in\u00a0writing, editing, design and overall packaging!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Second Place &#8211; Metro,\u00a0\u201cI really enjoyed seeing this new publication. There\u2019s some thoughtful design,\u00a0writing and editing throughout. I can tell you\u2019re having fun with the production and\u00a0enjoyed getting a feel for the personalities of the staff on the masthead.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>VISITOR PUBLICATION EXCELLENCE UNDER 500,000 per\/year<\/p>\n<p>First Place &#8211; The Kahala by Morris Visitor Publications,\u00a0\u201cThe Kahala really nailed some unique stories. I appreciate theme of\u00a0interconnectedness and it flows throughout the issue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Second Place &#8211; Halekulani Living, \u201cThe spreads and images were stunning in this issue. It\u2019s apparent that your visual\u00a0and design staff members carefully plan where stories should go and how they should\u00a0appear.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>VISITOR PUBLICATION EXCELLENCE OVER 500,000 per\/year<\/p>\n<p>First Place &#8211;\u00a0Hawaii Magazine\u2019s July\/August 2014 issue,\u00a0TJS: \u201cExcellent theme, attractive cover and topics that pull the reader through the issue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Second Place &#8211; Hawaii Magazine\u2019s October 2014 issue,\u00a0\u201cA great theme and attractive photos and layout.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>SPECIAL SECTION EXCELLENCE<\/p>\n<p>First Place &#8211;\u00a0MidWeek for its \u201ctasty\u201d piece done for Hawaii Foodbank that informed readers of Hunger\u00a0Action Month in September.\u00a0\u201cYou kept your readers and information presentation as a driver of this section, and\u00a0it shows. The infographic on the second page was particularly nice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Second Place &#8211;\u00a0Hawaii Tribune-Herald for \u201cCelebrate Hula,\u201d its guide for the 51st annual\u00a0Merrie Monarch Festival, &#8220;It was a very close race for first place and there was a lot to like about this section.\u00a0Design was clean and thoughtful, stories were well-written and editing was solid overall.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>TRADE MAGAZINE<\/p>\n<p>First Place winner in the Trade Magazine category is Building Industry\u00a0Magazine,\u00a0\u201cIn the end, this came down to two publications \u2014 one with better design and one\u00a0with more substantive writing (yours). It was a close competition, but substance won.\u00a0Excellent work on your feature articles. Nice to see a business story focus on women!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Second Place &#8211;\u00a0Honolulu Shops from Honolulu Magazine of PacificBasin\u00a0Communications,\u00a0\u201cYou\u2019ve mastered the art of the short story \u201ccharticle\u201d \u2014 chart and article. It\u2019s not\u00a0an easy thing to do or write. I particularly enjoyed your smart design solutions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>DIRECTORIES<\/p>\n<p>First Place &#8211; Honolulu Magazine for its \u201c2015 Private\u00a0School Guide.\u201d\u00a0\u201cStrong content that\u2019s tremendously valuable to readers, easy to use, engaging\u00a0design, a truly useful publication that is far more than an advertising vehicle.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Second Place &#8211; Honolulu\u00a0Magazine for its \u201c2015 All-island Restaurant Guide.\u201d\u00a0\u201cA mouth-wateringly beautiful publication chock-a-block full of valuable content\u00a0ranging from restaurant-specific details to foodie features.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>GENERAL WEBSITE EXCELLENCE<\/p>\n<p>First Place &#8211; HonoluluMagazine.com,\u00a0\u201cWell-organized. I appreciate the focus on lean navigation design \u2014 thanks for not\u00a0trying to highlight every imaginable piece of content. Visually appealing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Second Place &#8211; WestHawaiiToday.com,\u201cGood effort to expose high-interest content.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>ONLINE VIDEO<\/p>\n<p>First\u00a0Place &#8211; Hawaii Tribune-Herald for \u201cPahoa Village\u00a0Road Residents Prepare to Evacuate.\u201d\u00a0\u201cGood opening quote from the most animated of the subjects. B-roll well-matched\u00a0to audio where possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Second Place &#8211; Hawaii Tribune-Herald\u00a0for \u201cMan vs. Lava: Alfred Lee and His Berm.\u201d\u00a0\u201cGood to see that the subject is taped speaking from different locations. His\u00a0character comes across.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>ONLINE REPORTING<\/p>\n<p>First Place &#8211; West Hawaii Today for Chelsea\u00a0Jensen\u2019s breaking news coverage of Martin Frank Booth, who was sentenced and to life\u00a0in prison for the 2013 murder of Kona musician Robert Keawe Lopaka Ryder.\u00a0\u201cThe reporter took the right approach by pushing preliminary info to the web. Story\u00a0could have been enriched by video, additional photos and archive links, but rapid\u00a0delivery of info is the starting point for what we do online.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Second Place &#8211; Pacific Business,\u00a0News for Duane Shimogawa\u2019s exclusive story that investigated a billionaire Thai-Chinese\u00a0businessman who bought Kauai\u2019s Princeville Resort for $343 million.\u00a0\u201cGood to see that his piece came out of legwork on the beat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>EXCELLENCE IN COVER DESIGN (Newsprint)<\/p>\n<p>First Place &#8211; Hawaii Tribune-Herald.\u00a0\u201cThis cover has all of the elements of good news and design \u2014 dominant art,\u00a0attractive downpage art, hierarchy, attractive fonts and flow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Second Place &#8211; MidWeek for its publication\u00a0that celebrated the 50th anniversary of Pagoda Hotel.\u00a0\u201cThis creative piece draws the eye and uses graphics and colors in an effective way\u00a0to intrigue the reader.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>EXCELLENCE IN COVER DESIGN (Coated Stock)<\/p>\n<p>First Place \u00a0&#8211; Hawaii\u00a0Magazine for its July\/August 2014 issue.\u00a0\u201cThis issue combined theme, colors and fonts to give an overall consistent tone and\u00a0aesthetic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Second Place &#8211; Honolulu Magazine for its December 2014\u00a0issue, \u201cThe Everything Guide to Coffee.\u201d\u00a0\u201cThis clean and classic design uses the right fonts, colors and arrangements to\u00a0intrigue readers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>EXCELLENCE IN ILLUSTRATION<\/p>\n<p>First Place &#8211; Abstract Magazine for \u201cSeed\u00a0To Cup,\u201d illustrations by artist Sergio Garzon of real-life visits to coffee spots around the\u00a0island.<\/p>\n<p>Second Place &#8211; Halekulani\u00a0Living for \u201cThe Wonderful World of IZ.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>EDITORIAL CARTOON<\/p>\n<p>First Place &#8211; MidWeek for \u201cStatute of Limitations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Second Place &#8211; MidWeek for \u201cShell Game.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>EXCELLENCE IN DESIGN \u2014 NEWSPRINT<\/p>\n<p>First Place &#8211; Hawaii Tribune-Herald for\u00a0\u201cUnder the Surf.\u201d\u00a0\u201cKudos to the designer for keeping the typography simple, allowing the large photo\u00a0to shine. The use of large, soft drop shadows on the type creates an artistic and beautiful\u00a0\u201cunderwater\u201d effect, and conveys the message of the article well. The placement of the\u00a0column of text is perfect.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Second Place &#8211;\u00a0Hawaii Tribune Herald for \u201cCelebrate Hula.\u201d\u00a0\u201cThe designer effectively combined a variety of images and information into a well-\u00a0designed layout. The cover of the special section is especially eye-catching with its\u00a0successful use of color and dramatic visuals.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>EXCELLENCE IN DESIGN \u2014 COATED STOCK<\/p>\n<p>Firts Place &#8211;\u00a0Hana Hou for\u00a0\u201cHe\u2018e.\u201d\u00a0\u201cThis design is a winner for its less-is-more approach and understated elegance. The\u00a0photography is so beautiful and simple that the layout doesn\u2019t need any brightly-colored\u00a0graphics or fussy typefaces that might clutter it up. The one additional graphic that the\u00a0designer chose to use was pure genius \u2014 typesetting the word \u201che\u2018e\u201d in suction-cup-like\u00a0circles was a wonderfully creative decision.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Second Place &#8211; Honolulu Magazine for \u201cThe Everything Guide to Coffee.\u201d\u00a0\u201cThe designer effectively combined a variety of images, illustration techniques and\u00a0text into a beautiful layout. The textural quality of the coffee grounds, along with the\u00a0coffee cup \u201crings\u201d unify the layout and provide a nice theme throughout the piece. It can\u00a0be very difficult to combine so many elements, including sidebars and copious amounts\u00a0of text and information, and maintain an organized layout, but the designer did just that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>VISITOR PUBLICATION PHOTOGRAPHY<\/p>\n<p>First Place &#8211; Hawaii Magazine of\u00a0PacificBasin Communications.\u00a0\u201cImpressive. The break in repetition of shapes is perfect. The side-lighting gives\u00a0depth, and the color palette, all cool colors, really works to pull me into this image.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Second Place goes to Trump Hookipa, by Oahu Publications.\u00a0\u201cA nice array of wide, tight and medium images that together make me hungry.\u00a0Great use of color. Photos work well together with the story.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>ESSAY PHOTOGRAPHY<\/p>\n<p>First Place &#8211; Trump Hookipa for \u201cRhythm\u00a0of the Islands.\u201d \u201cYou made beautiful use of the light. And the strength here \u2014 besides the story \u2014\u00a0is the variety of the images. Great colors. Great texture.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Second Place winner is Mana for \u201cKealopiko.\u201d\u00a0\u201cI love how you found a variety of camera angles here. The front image really\u00a0pulled me in, and the images that showed interaction of people were also nice additions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>SPORTS PHOTOGRAPHY<\/p>\n<p>First Place &#8211; MidWeek for \u201cPinto Baseball.\u201d\u00a0\u201cYou really can\u2019t go wrong shooting photos of kids. In this case, I love the facial\u00a0expressions and the intensity of the kids. Good exposure, great cropping.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Second Place &#8211; West Hawaii Today.\u00a0\u201cNice crop. The cropping makes this image. Nice facial expressions. Good color\u00a0palette. This was an atypical sport to see coverage of.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>FEATURE PHOTOGRAPHY \u2014 NEWSPRINT<\/p>\n<p>First Place &#8211; Hawaii\u00a0Tribune-Herald for \u201cSmall Steps Toward Mars.\u201d\u00a0\u201cI love this image. On the subject matter alone, you had the viewer\u2019s interest.\u00a0However, the interaction between these two people really gave it a human interest\u00a0element. I also love the composition of the shot. I love the negative space, the fact that\u00a0the barren landscape is featured. I just love this image.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Second Place &#8211; Hawaii Tribune-Herald for \u201cSlow-Motion Torture.\u201d\u00a0\u201cGreat image. Including the man in the shot really gives the viewer a sense of\u00a0perspective to see how big the lava flow really is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>FEATURE PHOTOGRAPHY \u2014 COATED STOCK<\/p>\n<p>First Place &#8211; Hana\u00a0Hou for \u201cThe Martian Chronicle.\u201d\u00a0\u201cMy favorite aspect of the series is the story it tells\u2026 These images turn these\u00a0\u201castronauts\u201d into people. The photography at this level has to be excellence. The\u00a0storytelling and human interest really push this up to another level. Very well done.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Second Place &#8211;\u00a0Hawaii Magazine of PacificBasin Communications for \u201cOne Last Look:\u00a0Diver.\u201d\u00a0\u201cThis image is just gorgeous. I love that the diver\u2019s own legs form a leading line. I\u00a0love the beautiful tint of the image. I love the fullness of the frame and that there\u2019s not an\u00a0inch that\u2019s wasted. It\u2019s a beautiful picture that I could see hanging on someone\u2019s wall.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>SPOT NEWS PHOTOGRAPHY<\/p>\n<p>First Place &#8211; Hawaii Tribune-Herald for\u00a0\u201cWrath of Iselle.\u201d\u00a0TJS: \u201cI just love the photo of the cleanup crew truck. I love the framing the curving trees\u00a0provide. I love how the white truck contrasts, nicely, with the dark greenery. I love how\u00a0the road forms a slight leading line. It\u2019s a great photograph.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Second Place &#8211; Hawaii Tribune-Herald for \u201cIselle\u2019s Terrible Toll.\u201d\u00a0\u201cI rarely (maybe never) have said this, but I really like the chaos on the shot. While\u00a0the wires are also chaotic, they provide a nice framing and leading line aspect that really\u00a0brings the photo together\u2026 Nicely done.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>ARTS &amp; ENTERTAINMENT<\/p>\n<p>First Place &#8211;\u00a0\u00a0Wailea Magazine of\u00a0Morris Visitor Publications for \u201cEarth and Water, Mountain and Motion.\u201d\u00a0\u201cAn interesting story concept, executed through carefully chosen words that create\u00a0vivid images. The writer appreciates the subjects at a deep level and translates to a mass\u00a0audience what makes the artists special and their work a reflection of place.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Second Place &#8211; Honolulu Magazine for \u201cSummer of Books,\u201d which\u00a0appeared in its June 2014 issue.\u00a0\u201cThis is a refreshing local angle on the obligatory summer-reading booklist.
