For those readers interested in the topic, this provides another dimension to the coverage.\u201d<\/p>\n

    First Place –\u00a0West Hawaii Today <\/em>for \u201cInto Guillermo\u201d written by Chelsea Jensen who spent about 12 hours aboard a Hurricane Hunters C-130 aircraft to pen her story about how the 53rd Weather Reconnaissance Squadron collects data to assist Central Pacific Hurricane Center forecasters.\u00a0\u201cI like the mix of explanation and current news in this story, rather than it just being a feature about the forecast unit. The photo gallery is a good step, as well as the rapid push to the web.\u201d<\/p>\n

Looking at the photos, I also find myself wondering, \u2018How did the photographer GET some of those shots?\u2019 The designer effectively shows the surfer\u2019s passion for the ocean\u2019s waves through these gorgeous images.\u201d<\/p>\n

However, you\u2019ve turned what could have been an incredibly boring or clich\u00e9d assignment and turned it into something cool and contemporary.\u201d<\/p>\n

The emotion and hurt those women were feeling is palpable and gripping. The framing and close crop really enhances the image. Kudos on your ability to capture such an amazing moment while still being respectful to their circumstance.\u201d<\/p>\n

This is a non-traditional advocacy, but provides a great resource to preserve the history of this place. Excellent job.\u201d<\/p>\n

    Second Place – For Kauai Magazine for \u201cRapid Ohia Death Threatens the Forest.\u201d\u00a0\u201cImportant heads-up on a potentially transformative development in Hawaii\u2019s forests.\u201d<\/p>\n

    EDITORIAL FEATURE<\/p>\n

    First Place –\u00a0Hana Hou <\/em>for \u201cRiding the Plank.\u201d\u00a0\u201cFabulous, fascinating and I loved the first-person approach. A compelling story of the rebirth of the alaia wood-plank, finless surfboard and one person\u2019s effort to right the board \u2026 and tell its story \u2014 and, no bogus Hollywood ending with the author riding the new\/old board silhouetted by a Hawaiian sunset \u2026 Although I do hope Mr. Shapiro eventually stood up on the thing.\u201d<\/p>\n

    Second Place – \u201cZippy\u2019s Senior Club\u201d from Honolulu Magazine<\/em>.\u00a0\u201cI was prepared to toss this piece aside with a \u2018whatever.\u2019 But then I read the lead, and I was hooked. A fun, engaging, reflective look at the crew of seniors who populate a well-known and popular Hawaiian restaurant chain, with plenty of the author\u2019s story in the mix.\u201d<\/p>\n
